Separating pulp from the diffusion juice is an important step in the purification process. Indeed, during liming, the pectin in the pulp is deteriorated, forming a setting agent with the calcium. This results in a deterioration of the filterability of the 1st carbonation juice and lime, the turbidity of the juice and therefore the sugar, as well as an increased loss of sugar in the lime.

These particulates also clog the exchangers, resulting in a deterioration over time of the refinery’s energy consumption.
